Power and Politics: Female Healthcare Leadership

Margo A. Karsten is presently President and CEO of Karsten Consulting, a company helping organizations to improve their work environment and employee engagement, align their HR systems, and prepare for Malcolm Baldrige review.

Prior experience includes 3 years as CEO/President of Poudre Valley Hospital, where Margo provided leadership and strategic direction for a 285-bed hospital, clinics and behavioral health.  In collaboration with the leadership team at Poudre Valley, Margo accomplished the following:  (1) Overall physician job satisfaction “top box” in the Avator data bank, 2005, (2) Patient Satisfaction improvement from the 42nd percentile ranking to the top 25th percentile ranking, (3) Turnover rate reduction from 22% to 8.2%, vacancy rate 4% in 2004 and 2.2% in 2005, (4) Malcolm Baldrige national site visit October 2005, (5) Revamped Employee Forums, attendance increased from 50 participants to 800, (6) Developed and implemented robotic program for three specialties, and (7) Developed clinical service lines in Maternal/Child/Ortho/Gastric Bypass, and Oncology.
